"The mass murder in Gaza outlines a pattern, a set of tools and measures of extermination, subjugation, and expulsion".

"What is it about genocide that Global-North governments find so valuable and attractive that they protect its screamingly criminal substance and application, even at the cost of completely ruining their standing with everyone else on the planet?"
It sets a precedent "to subdue the cities of the Global South (and the poor in general").

"Why?
"The general reason is obvious, and while there would be much to say about it, let’s just summarize it here: The West is in decline in a severely crisis-ridden world (it has produced most or even all of these crises, but let’s pass over that irony for now). Its “elites” have decided not to adjust constructively – which would be entirely possible by compromise, cooperation, and sharing – but instead […] they will fight for what they hubristically see as their “garden”."

Ok, we're at #Weber's concept of #patrimonialism, we don't need to go to #Arendt's #totalitarianism (yet) to analyse the #UZA. That's good, ain't it?

"In its governmental guise, patrimonialism is distinguished by running the state as if it were the leader’s personal property or family business. It can be found in many countries, but its main contemporary exponent—at least until January 20, 2025—has been Vladimir Putin."

The banality of evil
In addition to my earlier post on the importance of #empathy by #hannaharendt , #arendt also ‘coined’ #thebanalityofevil . Not ‘evil’ as we commonly define, but carried out by ‘normal people’ in a #totalitarianSystem losing the characteristics we would normally recognise as evil. The #usa is rapidly evolving in such a system under #trump. Recognize the systems and speak out!

Food for thought in this context:

“In Lithuania, and many other European countries, it is still very difficult to talk about conscription – people believe that someone else will sacrifice themselves for their homeland in times of crisis. Why should it be me? How can the state presume that it has the right to take me out of my life, and to ‘ruin my career’? […] The prevalence of this egocentric worldview confirms that we are losing the sense of positive freedom – not freedom from, but freedom to, freedom to do something meaningful, to care for this common world of ours, to act responsibly, to build and creatively project our future. […] In this context, it is worth returning to the moral and political philosophy of two seminal thinkers of the twentieth century: Hannah Arendt and Jan Patočka.”

www.eurozine.comUkraine and the future of post-heroic EuropeDoes Europe’s vaunted ‘post-heroic mentality’ render it indifferent to the self-sacrifice of Ukrainians in defending their country – and would it prevent Europeans from doing the same in the event of Russian aggression?

#ethiek #arendt

In this excerpt, Hannah Arendt highlighted how while "indulging us in the hysterical outpouring of their feelings of guilt", German generations after WWII wouldn't even dare to criticise the older generation whose participation in the genocide of Jewish people in Europe was very real.

After all, it could hurt their career.

She denounces that proclaimed guilt as "artificial", "almost pleasant".
