Good morning.
22 April 2025
For some reason, Freddie and the Dreamers, a British band, popped into my head this morning. They had one number one hit in the USA in 1965: I'm Telling You Now, written by Mitch Murray and Freddie Garrity. Here's a snippet of the song's lyrics:
'I'm telling you now I'm telling you right away I'll be saying for many a day I'm in love with you now...'
The band also popularized their own quirky dance, The Freddy, which was a lively and playful take on uncoordinated jumping jacks. They also released a song called Do the Freddy that seemed great at the time, but after listening to it again, well... tastes evolve.
"The British invasion certainly made a lot of noise in the record industry." – Jeff Barry
Doing a little research on why it's so hard to find any digital recordings of the Beatles album "Introducing the Beatles," which my older sister had. Evidently, there was a legal battle between the Vee-Jay label and Capitol Records over the rights to release Beatles music in the US, and Vee-Jay lost.
"[Vee-Jay] rush-released on January 10th, 1964, becoming the first Beatles album ever released in America. They beat Capitol Records to the punch by releasing their album ten days before the first "official" Capitol Beatles album “Meet The Beatles!” was released."
And I never knew this. The court ruled against Vee-Jay because the songs “Love Me Do” and “PS I Love You” were owned by Capitol Records.
"Vee-Jay acted quickly by re-pressing the album without those two songs, replacing them with “Ask Me Why” and “Please Please Me.” This new version of the album was released around February 10th, 1964."
My sister's album must have been the January release vs. the February re-release because it had “Love Me Do” and “PS I Love You.”
Here's one of the few digital recordings I've found of the Vee-Jay record. (Too bad the beginning of John's "One two three four" is cut off.) This song rocks so hard. John's scream and George's guitar solo.
Just saw this on John Entwistle. FUCK, he was talented. Thunderfingers indeed. RIP to a fuckin LEGEND
9/ Emily Bell, a British-born journalist teaching and raising family in the U.S., wrote in the Guardian British editors are ***far less concerned with accuracy***.
“On more than one occasion, British editors have told me about their astonishment that newsrooms with such high levels of resources as the national US one ‘take so bloody long to publish a story’" she wrote.

THE KINKS - SUNNY AFTERNOON
Released in 1966, "Sunny Afternoon" topped the UK charts. Featured on the album "Face to Face," it marked a shift in the band's sound with its satirical lyrics and laid-back melody. The song's narrator, a wealthy man facing financial troubles, ironically laments his woes while enjoying a sunny afternoon.
#BritishInvasion is when you see a @babe post, then see it again boosted by @onepict . Fine: I’ll eat the crumpets.
Lilys - Better Can't Make Your Life Better
Lilys leader Kurt Heasley obviously liked jerking people around somewhat...if you were expecting something in the style of the immediately previous Eccsame the Photon Band, you probably thought they put the wrong LP in the sleeve when this came out.
Heavily influenced by classic British Invasion bands, this is very Kinks-y to my ears...although Ray'd have to be pretty high.
Woke up this mornin' feelin' fine
There's somethin' special on my mind
Last night I met a new girl
in the neighborhood
Whoa yeah
Somethin' tells me I'm into something good
She's the kind of girl who's not too shy
And I can tell I'm her kind of guy
She danced close to me
like I hoped she would
Somethin' tells me I'm into something good

Well, no one told me about her
The way she lied
Well, no one told me about her
How many people cried
But it's too late
to say you're sorry
How would I know?
Why should I care?
Please don't bother
trying to find her
She's not there!
Well, let me tell you 'bout
the way she looked
the way she acted
the color of her hair
Her voice was soft and cool
Her eyes were clear and bright
But she's not there

Late yesterday night
I saw a light shine from a
And as I looked again
Your face came into sight
I couldn't walk on
Until you'd gone from your
I had to make you mine
I knew you were the one
Oh, I would be glad
Just to have a love like that
Oh, I would be true
And I'd live my life for you
So meet me tonight
Just where the light shines from our
And as I take your hand
Say that you'll be mine tonight

It's right that I should care about you
And try to make you happy when you're blue
It's right, it's right to feel the way I do
Because, because I love you
It's wrong to say I don't think of you
Cuz when you say these things
You know it makes me blue
Give me one kiss and I'll be happy
Just, just to be with you
Give me, give me, a chance to be near you
Because, because I love you
