Februar vergangenen Jahres in einem explosiven Ausbruch gewaltige Strahlungsmengen ins All schleuderte, schaute die erst wenige Monate alte indische Raumsonde Aditya-L1 genau zu – und fing so die ersten Aufnahmen eines solchen Flares in der untersten Sonnenatmosphäre ein. Die Auswertungen der Messdaten legt ein Forscherteam unter Leitung des Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (Indien) heute in der Fachzeitschrift The Astrophysical Journal Letters vor. An der Veröffentlichung ist auch das Max-Planck-Institut für Sonnensystemforschung (MPS) in Göttingen beteiligt. Der beobachtete Strahlungsausbruch der Kategorie X6.3 gehört zu den stärksten des vergangenen Jahres; mit ähnlich starken Flares gingen wenige Monate später spektakuläre Polarlichter einher, die selbst in Südeuropa zu sehen waren. Die neuen Beobachtungen helfen zu verstehen, wie Flares entstehen und sich in den verschiedenen Schichten der Sonnenatmosphäre ausbreiten.
