In 2024, #WildlifeServices killed nearly 2 million animals alone—an increase of over 474,000 #animals from 2023—including nearly 58,000 #coyotes. The government agency has killed hundreds of endangered #GrayWolves, threatened #GrizzlyBears, #beavers, #foxes, #bobcats, #MountainLiona, #RiverOtters, #porcupines, migratory #shorebirds, and many other #species.

#Philly So now that #coyotes are in the #Wissahickon people are acting like they are dealing with dangerous creatures you should watch out for. I was walking the other day and so guy yelled out and said "Sir! Just letting you know that someone saw a coyote up ahead". I thanked him but I grew up with coyotes around all my life. Don't try to befriend them, make sure they have a healthy fear of humans, if they try to approach yell or throw things in their direction (not at them) . They want nothing to do with humans if they can help it. What IS in danger is your pets, they are tasty coyote chow. If anything, coyotes being here has been great because I have had to deal with WAY less entitled dog owners who let their #dogs run free. This is dangerous to other hikers and other dog owners. Leash your damned dogs for their own safety and others!

In Singapore, local are learning to live with otters.

"“The Wildlife Unit [of NYC Parks] has worked closely with partners including the New York City Police Department and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to promote the safe coexistence between people and wildlife like coyotes,” says Katrina Toal, deputy director of the unit."

Learning to #Cope Like a #Coyote

psychologytoday.com/us/blog/ti

Key points:

- When facing #environmental change, the opportunism of the coyote beats the apex #predator behavior of the #wolf.
- #Coyotes teach us that #behavioral #flexibility is more valuable than specialization in uncertain times.
- #Mesopredators think like both #hunter and #hunted, preparing them for a world without rules.
- The most innovative #species thrive at the edges of e#cosystems.

Psychology TodayLearning to Cope Like a CoyoteWhile we're told to "be more human" in the age of AI, maybe we should be taking notes from North America's scrappiest survivor instead.

It's always weirded me out that humans think of any (other) animals as pests or invaders in our space, since WE are the ones technically invading THEIR space, as they've already been living on the land for so long.

This is a really cool piece about coyotes, urban wildlife, and co-existing together: biographic.com/the-coyote-next

bioGraphic · The Coyote Next DoorWhat urban wildlife can teach us about cognition, survival, and how to be good neighbors.

"Our observations and data indicate that coyotes are an ambush predator of harbor seal pups in multiple regions along the California coast, including one mainland rookery in which coyotes regularly hunt seals during the pupping season. Due to their large body size and predictable availability, harbor seal pups can serve as a substantial food source for coyote predators that may generate cascading ecological effects in terrestrial ecosystems."

👀😮 A #coyote was captured while hiding inside the produce at a #Chicago #Aldi grocery store. 🙀

The coyote had apparently entered through the front door. He is now safely at a #wildlife rehabilitation center, where his health will be evaluated before being released back into the wild.

Pack of coyotes on the other side of fence. The dog warned them off, but then was hanging out as they were yipping back. Had to haul him back inside. Big dummy. 😬

(he's a big dog, but a full pack of coyotes is inadvisable. They eat small dogs around here.)
