Hey Fediverse, I've seen a lot of people make references to DMs here , as in "DM me to talk about this topic ."
I assume that means direct message. But I don't see any sort of capability to do that anywhere! I can start a message by @'ing someone and they see it and reply usually, but it's just a normal toot.
So, what's wrong with me? What am I missing? Is it just my instance that lacks direct private messages?

Im #Tusky Client v19. 0 sehe ich Direktnachrichten mit Medien, diese kommen aber immer "versteckt" - ich muss die einzeln anklicken, um sie zu sehen.
Ich finde dafür keine #Einstellung.

I would prefer that these "Direct Messsges" are shown in one's own timeline with a more apparent #indication, for example with light grey or #colored #background.
Wie geht eine #Direktnachricht #directmessage an eine Person auf Mastodon? Reicht es das @-Zeichen davor zu setzen und den NutzerNamen dahinter? Ist das dann ganz privat oder liest jemand mitm Muss es dann der Name incl. Instanz sein oder erreiche ich Nutzer außerhalb meiner Instanz gar nicht?
Ich nehme auch gerne einen Link zu einer Anleitung, aber bitte nicht "Wie funktioniert Mastodon". Das finde ich in der Google Suche in Hülle und Fülle. Mich interessiert nur diese konkrete Frage.
So @matschaffer & I just discovered one can do DMs on Mastadon, they are just posts with visibility set to the sender & receiver.
Just click on a users #profile, click the three dots and click on Direct message.
