It is funny to be back in the place where I used to live for most of my life. Having been away for so long, I have all kinds of emotions: some positive, some negative. The mixture leaves me puzzled. Now, reflecting on them, I decide to concentrate on the positive ones. I have no use for the other ones. These are mainly ghosts from the past. Styria is lovely, the weather is perfect, it smells fantastically, and a school kid even fell in love with my Brompton.

A few weeks ago, I cycled from Copenhagen to Oslo, and I took one of my film cameras with me. I finally had some time to scan and edit them so I can start posting a different perspective on this trip.

The ones here are from what I would call my day zero. I took them when I got to Copenhagen from Berlin on Saturday. They are all from Copenhagen.

The ones here are from what I would call my day zero. I took them with me when I got to Copenhagen from Berlin on Saturday. They are all from Copenhagen. My plan was to unwind and cool down before the upcoming solo 700-kilometer bike ride. I was a little nervous about the whole thing, as you can imagine.

It was fun to be there once again and try to relax before the bike ride north.

I am out with my partner on a three-day bicycle tour through West- and Oststeiermark, Austria. (today approx. 46.6890, 15.2450). We have perfect weather, and it smells pumpkin seeds mixed with ripe cornfields everywhere. It feels good to be back in my former home country for a while. And my Brompton behaves as if it were born here, too.

InstagramTorsten Frank on Instagram: "Woke up super refreshed but with super stiff back. Brought this problem into the race but amplified the guesthouse mattress the issue? Putting on socks and basically everything took ages. Took my time to stretch and do gymnastics, too. Then the usual guesthouse breakfast. Surprise - traditional Kyrgyz table. I.e.: superlow and to squat in front. No way for me. Took my time to really get some carbs in (and manage my back). Felt that already yesterday my fueling was lacking and my energy low. When finally ready, rain started. Put on full rain gear and started pretty late. Much off todays menu: the Pamir Highway and tarmac. First flat towards Sary Tash. Enroute, sun came out again. More back excersises in a bus stop. Fixed my dynamo system by cleaning the spade connector (that was all what’s needed). Stopped by my first Kafesi. Which translated would mean Café but that’s probably the thing you won’t get in there. Nor anywhere along the race route (except for Naryn). The most you can hope for is instant coffee. No - Kafesi are more like Bistros / rest stops with food like soup and stuff. And beef soup with bread and black tea was what I got (still anxious of ordering anything which could prove a food poisoning risk like not fresh meat filled pastries which would have been much more a favorite of mine and which would have been great to take away, too).

But the soup was good. Put loads of sugar in all the tea, too. So I went into the climb towards the pass. It’s called „40 years of Kyrgyzstan“ and features 2 peaks of 3550 and 3600 m. Not every vehicle tackling it makes it. This huge concrete pump lorry seems to have spilled some vital innards plus loads of oil onto the tarmac. Within the past three weeks this beautiful #8bar gravelbike went from a bunch of seperate components to a proper gravelbike, from Berlin to northern Italy and back.

With the help of a friend who loves pottering around too, I managed to assemble it in a diy workshop and went on my first little bikepacking trip immediately. There wasn‘t even time for a proper test run (which I wouldn‘t recommend, but I didn’t have a choice/enough time).

I‘m so proud and thankful that everything worked out.. building the bicycle up in Berlin, traveling to Italy by train, joining a friend I met while cycling to Istanbul last year, cycling to the ocean on my own, accidentally meeting kind people at Venice and spontaneously returning to Berlin with them.

Also, some new followers joined on the way. Welcome to you all, I’m happy to share my journeys with you 🛠️💖

Stay tuned, take it slow, and be part of team 161 🚩

I'm riding a #bikepacking race/holiday in October. Just learned the comms are all WhatsApp-based. I don't do Meta. So, what to do? #lazyweb
It's somewhat pathetic, but I do feel sometimes I miss out by refusing to use WhatsApp. Does anyone use a burner number service for such things? And/or say a Signal bridge service (Beeper?) to distance oneself from dealing with Meta direct? #privacy

I did a test ride and cut 1.5cm on each side. 77cm is still quite a lot. But also, I'm 187cm... Before I cut further I have to evaluate the position of the inner bar ends. The main reason for going narrower would be to get them narrower. But I could just move them in with leaving the grips.
