The controversial detection of phosphine and ammonia hints that bacterial life could be surviving in the planet's milder upper atmosphere. But to confirm its existence, we'll need to measure the atmosphere directly. A new mission concept was recently unveiled called the Venus Explorer for Reduced Vapours in the Environment (VERVE). It's a CubeSat that could fly with ESA's EnVision mission in 2031, studying the atmosphere for more evidence of active biology.

Two “alien-curious scientists” believe AI could hold the key to humanity finally making contact with extraterrestrials.

Writing for Scientific American, astronomer Franck Marchis and NASA researcher Ignacio G. Lopez-Francois, said that after 40 years of serious search with no results, it is time to “radically rethink our approach.” Their suggestion? Transmit a well-curated large language model into the universe that would “enable extraterrestrial civilizations to indirectly converse with us and learn about us without being hindered by the vast distances of space.” Here’s more from their piece.

First Contact Could Turn Out Well for Humanity

Most science fiction portrays the first contact between humanity and alien civilizations as a disaster. That's probably because our history hasn't turned out so well. But does it have to end poorly for us? A new paper looks at the game theory of first contact. It shows that the rational response to another civilization is to be cautious, with both groups understanding the other before taking decisive action. Communication would be difficult but not impossible. Since we share a physical Universe and have reached a technology level that allows us to detect each other, we could assume some of their characteristics in advance.
