@hollywoodreporter That would pay for #PublicBroadcasting for a year. I hope #SouthPark creators Matt and Trey help out!
Under the #Constitution, that #power is afforded to #Congress. But #Trump & #RussVought have sought to reconfigure the #budget on the *premise* that they have expansive authority to act on their own, a position echoed by some #Republicans in Congress [only when they’re in power].
Last week, Republicans approved a set of #spending #cuts formally sought by the White House, revoking $9B in enacted funding for #PublicBroadcasting & #ForeignAid.
#PublicRadio stations across the country lost a total of $350M for each of the next 2 years when #Congress narrowly voted to approve #Trump’s clawback of >$1B in funds for #PublicBroadcasting that were already approved for the next two fiscal years.
“It's the short-term step for how we respond right now. We're going to use the rest of the year to plan for how we bridge what's to come in order to support & sustain the network for the future,”Maher said.
#NPR news chief Edith Chapin to step down days after #Congress votes to strip #funding
NPR's #editor in chief & acting chief content officer Edith Chapin told colleagues Tues morning that she has decided to step down.
The veteran #news leader's announcement comes just days after the #Republican-led Congress, driven largely by #Trump's claims of liberal bias at #NPR, voted to strip #PublicBroadcasting of all #FederalFunding.

@ben You know, I was just thinking along the same lines yesterday. "I would start immediately; time is of the essence. The first step, within a month or two, would be to prioritize stations by a combination of vulnerability and likelihood to create a news desert in their absence. These would be tiered into those that can survive independently, those needing moderate support, and stations facing closure, with stations with no alternatives in their localities first in each category. I’d then launch an accelerated fundraising campaign targeting major donors, foundations, and corporate sponsors specifically aimed and preserving the stations that were most in need."
Great article! I hope TPTB in #PublicBroadcasting are reading it!
@Runkefer American Coalition for Public Radio also has this call-to-action site: https://protectmypublicmedia.org
OK, here is a publicly-shareable dashboard of #PublicBroadcasting stations most at risk (thank you @Runkefer) . This list is sorted by “dependence”, defined as:
Federal revenue / Total station revenue.
In other words, a 90% dependence score means Federal money accounts for 90% of the station’s income.
Since Federal money is being cut by #Trump, the more dependent a station is on Federal money, the more devastated they will be.
I encourage you to pick some station that calls out to you (don’t all pick the number one station!) and find their website and make a *recurring* donation of $5 or $10 a month. Make sure it’s a RECURRING donation, so you give these stations a dependable lifeline.
Don’t forget, some employers will match your donations. Make your bosses support public broadcasting!
https://data.semipublic.co/public/dashboard/79538ae6-407d-49c0-bb7e-73e4a594f8a7
Can you spare $5/month or more for this #publicBroadcasting station under threat? Make sure you sign up for *recurring* support, because that’s what they need!
Don’t forget to sign up for employer matching if you have it, and get your bosses to support an at-risk station.
Click the DONATE button at the top of this page:
https://www.northcountrypublicradio.org
Make sure it’s a *recurring* donation! https://mas.to/@3dogcouch/114888128435653886
I wonder if there is a list of at-risk #publicBroadcasting stations in rural areas that will shut down because of the recent defunding. Those stations may be a great candidate for sending your recurring support even if you don’t leave near them.
It’s better than subscribing to Paramount Plus, that’s for damn sure.
I signed up to #PBS Passport and I’m donating $20/month to my local station, KQED. It’s a better investment than subscribing to Paramount Plus, for sure. Consider signing up for a *recurring* donation to your local station to show your support.
Even better, some employers will *match* your recurring donations. Get your bosses to support your local station!

‘#GoodTrouble’ #protesters rally in #BangorME against the #Trump administration
by Annie Rupertus July 17, 2025
"About 200 people gathered on Stillwater Avenue near the Bangor Mall Thursday evening to rally against the Trump administration in honor of the late congressman and civil rights activist #JohnLewis.
"The event was the latest in a series of nationwide protests broadly opposing President Donald Trump’s policies, with '#GoodTroubleLivesOn' events planned in more than 1,500 locations across all 50 states, according to The Guardian.
"More than 20 Maine communities participated in Thursday’s protests. The Bangor event was organized by #IndivisibleBangor, a progressive advocacy group that formed after the 2016 election to oppose Trump’s agenda. Indivisible has thousands of chapters across the country.
"The protest aimed to embody Lewis’s appeal for Americans to get into 'good trouble, #NecessaryTrouble,' in pursuit of #SocialJustice, according to organizer Mary Ann Larson.
" 'People are waking up,' Larson said, noting she was especially concerned about the recently passed budget reconciliation bill and what it will mean for #RuralMaine hospitals and people who rely on #FoodStamps funded by the federal government.
"Thursday’s protest attendees were mostly older adults. Many brought American flags and pro-democracy signs with messages like '#NoKings in America' and 'imagine being afraid of #diversity more than #dictatorship' — similar messaging to the larger 'No Kings' rally last month, which saw more than 1,000 participants in Bangor.
"The group seemed to get mostly positive responses from drivers passing by on the busy Bangor road, who often honked or waved out of their windows at the crowd lined up on the curb between Chick-fil-A and Washville.
"One attendee, artist Bernice Cross, wore a handmade jacket with painted American flag imagery. She drove to the protest from Greenbush in a car she painted with abstract art and #BlackLivesMatter messaging in 2020 in response to the murder of #GeorgeFloyd by a Minneapolis police officer.
"Cross came out because 'I love America,' she said, and in her view, Trump is destroying America and the values it was founded on.
"For Cynthia Purmort and Mary Ann Labue of Cape Cod, who drove down to Bangor from their camp in Willimantic, a desire to defend the Constitution and individual freedoms were key in bringing them out to the protest.
" 'These are desperate times,' Purmort said.
"Many rallygoers also mentioned defending #immigrants as a key issue, with some chanting, 'Hey hey! Ho ho! #StephenMiller’s got to go' in reference to Trump’s #HomelandSecurity advisor.
"Multiple protesters also expressed concerns about the measure approved by the Senate Thursday that would slash funding for #PublicBroadcasting and international aid [#USAID].
"Thursday’s rally was planned to coincide with the five-year anniversary of Lewis’s death.
"He was a key figure in the #CivilRights Movement who spent decades advocating for #RacialJustice and nonviolent #resistance. He is especially known for leading over 600 voting rights protesters on an #Alabama march from #SelmaToMontgomery in 1965 that is widely credited with spurring the passage of the landmark #VotingRightsAct.
"Alabama state troopers attacked the nonviolent marchers on Selma’s #EdmundPettusBridge and fractured Lewis’s skull, but he survived and later was elected to represent an Atlanta district in the U.S. Congress in 1986, serving until he died of pancreatic cancer in 2020."
$179 billion for #Military projects, but $1 billion to keep Americans safe, informed and educated (via #PublicBroadcasting) is too much?!! They only want soldiers to fix the machines when they break down! They don't care about science, culture, building community, etc.

#Trump Cuts to #PublicMedia Threaten #NativeAmerican Stations That Protect #Culture & #PublicHealth, Issue Alerts
July 18, 2025
"We speak to Loris Taylor, president of #NativePublicMedia, about the Trump administration’s drastic #defunding of public media and its impact on tribal nations. Fifty-nine #TribalRadioStations and one tribal #TelevisionStation that depend on federal funding will be among the first to face possible closure, putting some of the essential services that #PublicBroadcasting provides, including warning systems for missing #IndigenousWomen and girls, at risk.
"Taylor shares how Native-led public media helps preserve #IndigenousLanguages and helped keep communities informed during the peak of the COVID-19 #pandemic. She fears that without these same resources and 'with the #ClimateCrisis increasing, [we] are going to be operating on the margins of information and are not going to have real lifesaving information available to our citizens when they need it most.' @notalegalrecord.net I lived in Boston for nearly 40 years. My daughter grew up with Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers. I listened to classical music played by Robert J Lurtsema, jazz on Eric in the Evening on the radio. All Things Considered brought me an in depth look at the news.
Republicans tried for decades to defund WGBH and all of public broadcasting. They've done it. I am in tears.

A catastrophic blow to public broadcasting happened while all of us were sleeping.
Watch as many radio and TV public stations are going to get sadly killed for just hatred alone.

Bill Goodman, a former longtime host of “Kentucky Tonight” on KET-TV, which broadcasts statewide from Lexington, recalled watching a recent episode of his old show that devoted nearly an entire hour to an in-depth conversation about #Medicaid cuts. The guests engaged in reasoned & intricate arguments from opposite sides of the national debate.
“You don’t find that on commercial television,” he said.
The explosion in #media sources is what Capitol Hill #Republicans & their allies point to in justifying this year’s rescission package.
“With cellphones & internet & all that, I think the ability of people almost any part of the country to access all kinds of information sources is, you know, greater than it’s ever been,” Jeff Miron, a VP of Cato Institute, a libertarian research group, said this week—on none other than #NPR.
“He was unpleasantly surprised that a lot of conservative politicians from red states resisted,” said Steve Oney, the author of “On Air,” a book on the history of #NPR. “In their communities, their #PublicRadio & #PublicTelevision stations were seen as assets.”
Now, though, Oney said, “people get their news from anywhere they want, so there’s not the critical-mass support back in red-state America for #PublicBroadcasting.”
