"In #federatedsocialmedia, localisation allows users to engage with people who share common regional experiences and concerns. This alignment supports better contextual understanding of speech norms, and the amplification of #localvoices often overlooked on global platforms.
#Regionalservers can also serve as hubs for civic discourse, activism, and community support, making them vital for democratic engagement and #culturalpreservation."

"…many #publicinstitutions want to move away from Facebook and Twitter, but feel locked in. They know those platforms are toxic, yet all the people are there. But what if we stopped treating #theFediverse like a chaotic free-for-all and started showing how it can also work for structured, “responsible” #publishing? #WordPress already has millions of users. The #ActivityPubplugin is mature, maintained, and already working. All it takes is will, and a little guidance."

"At the heart of these alternative apps lies #theFediverse platform — a portmanteau of "federated" and "universe" that represents a radical reimagining of how social media can work. Unlike traditional platforms where users are locked into isolated ecosystems, the Fediverse operates as an interconnected network of independent servers that communicate with each other through a standard protocol called #ActivityPub."

"Rossini’s video followed a keynote presentation on day 2 of #FediForum by Christine Lemmer-Webber... She made the point that the apps that came to dominate in the Web 2.0 era (such as Twitter and Meta’s Facebook) were centralized, and that #theFediverse aims to return to the peer-to-peer internet that preceded Web 2.0.
#LemmerWebber also noted that “we can’t succeed without #joy.” In other words, the web should be fun, as it was when it started in the 1990s."

The New Stack · Bringing Joy Back to the Web: Fediverse vs. Centralized AppsThe future is federated, say open web fans. But while new products demoed at FediForum show promise, is it enough to usurp X and Facebook?

"This new #payment system allows for ways to financially support artists on #theFediverse, and the levels of support resemble a hybrid of what both #Bandcamp and #Patreon offer. Not only does this feature include line items for digital media, but a new mechanism for access and distribution. Additionally, the flagship instance of Bandwagon.fm will be taking 0% of any money #musicians make."

"Federating #Ghost means publishers no longer have to choose between owning their work and reaching an audience. You post once, on your own domain, and it travels everywhere.
While centralized networks are coming apart as battles rage between the most powerful people on earth who own them, #thefediverse represents an #alternative path.
It's an answer to the question: What if nobody owned this? The same question that #TimBernersLee posed to the world, 35 years ago."

"Fediverse statistics site #FediDB, operated by PixelFed and Loops creator Daniel Supernault, now has an #onboarding tool to help people #getstarted with #thefediverse. It asks the user a few simple questions: first to select the type of content they are interested in, such as microblogging, video or forums. Based on that choice, it recommends various platforms. Based on the platform choice it asks for a few simple filters, such as region and community size, before presenting the user with a list of servers to choose from for registration."

"So what can you do now?
For immediate participation, the best bet is to start using and supporting #theFediverse platforms that exist, even if they are still copies of the #dotcons. They work, they are functional, and they serve as a stepping stone toward something better. But don’t stop there, push beyond them. Get involved with projects that are trying to break out of these patterns. Contribute to discussions, support developers, and help to fund & create the #bridges we desperately need."

#Ghost, "used by several notable publications including Casey Newton’s Platformer, 404 Media, David Sirota’s The Lever, Tangle, Jason Calacanis’s Inside, SFist, and others… is now connected to #thefediverse.
…the company hopes to more deeply integrate users’ social web profiles with Ghost memberships, but for now, they operate independently from one another. Other coming features include tools to block, report, and mute people or add images or media to notes and replies."

"#TheFediverse doesn’t need to be one thing, that’s its strength. But if we let the #bridges decay, we lose the possibility of cross-pollination, of radical ideas seeping into #mainstreaming consciousness… Instead of fighting, as we do, to make one version of the #Fediverse dominant, maybe the real work is in keeping the network alive, messy, imperfect, but always connected. Because it’s in those #connections that real alternatives grow."

"What’s exciting about #theFediverse is that most of it hasn’t been built yet. Now, the majority of users see it as a #TwitterReplacement. And that’s great and the first step in building critical mass.
But, the sky is the limit. As you have seen anything can be built. The only limit is our imaginations. The Fediverse’s power isn’t just in the instances you join or the apps you use or whatever tool we build. It’s us. Our creativity will determine its future."

"This project explores the possibilities for better #search and #discovery on the Fediverse in the form of an optional, pluggable service. This service should be decentralized, independent of any one specific Fediverse service and respect user choice and privacy.

We will build a reference discovery provider and protocols (and an example consumer implementation, inside of Mastodon) to enable users to discover content across the rich diversity of #theFediverse."
