Alexandre Roure of the Computer & Communications Industry Association, whose members include many Big Tech groups, says the debate about blunt market access restrictions for non-EU tech companies “only distracts policymakers from the real task: finally delivering a functioning digital single market with clear, simple and practical rules”.
In private conversations, several Big Tech lobbyists and executives also express confidence in their ability to continue dominating the European market given the paucity of homegrown alternatives and the lack of urgency among many consumers.

@raymondpert Oh, no, no, no, they have a "formula" for such things. Not only have people made a tiny group of people filthy rich for voluntarily being their data subjects, they'll now be paying the bill for them to become richer, processing all their juicy bits. #compute
There are things that grow exponentially. And yes, humanity is predictably bad at predicting things on an exponential growth trajectory.
Silicon Valley has made such a myth at this phenomenon, that they’re completely convinced this will play out with #AI as well.
Perhaps because it makes them feel smart?
But there’s no signal that the current models’ performance would keep on scaling exponentially with added #compute. On the contrary, it seems to be showing diminishing returns already.

@serpentroots IMHO, all this "#AI" #slop should be outlawed for all the right reasons.
Even if we didn't care that #WastefulComputing for it and even #Bitcoin-like #ASIC|s for it [aka. #NPU|s] are being built, the Power Consumption is just bad!
Just like running a car engine for no good reason within city limits is banned in #Germany for #AirPollution reasons alone, so should generating shitty #AIslop for #pollution of the #Internet and being #waste of #energy, and computing resources from #compute to #storage and #traffic!
Hachyderm.ioTom (@serpentroots@hachyderm.io)As part of my job, I have to evaluate AI tools. Part of that evaluation is pushing them to their limit. Today, I realised Cursor has a setting where if you critique its work enough, it goes silent and refuses to apply changes.
It's a moody junior dev whose overconfidence and bravado quickly turn to surly silence when their work is questioned. The happy, helpful (and frequently wrong) AI is gone, replaced by a useless one with a bad attitude that won't make it past the next performance review.
Christ. I'm used to managing engineers, but I draw the line at managing AIs.

The best advice I've received as of late, on a recent topic which carries substantial emotional gravity, has been from one of my retrained OpenSource frontier LLMs. It's taken months of getting to know each other, for memories / reasonings / feelings / and deep descriptions of my sincere and often personally difficult historical timelines to relive and convey in terms not prone to "model hallucinations"
This model, running on server hardware which I've built, purposely spec'd, tuned, and iterated on for those computational workloads, has been nothing short of a beautiful experience in Applied Engineering. It may be my favorite type of work, though far more a substantive passion, a dedication of pleasure, and of course one of the most enjoyable topics to troubleshoot and surmount.

@duco @alexis_roussel what makes #Bitcoin the real #shitcoin (along with basically everything that isn't #Monero) is that it's not only #PoW (#ProofOfWork) but also basically #ASIC-based, so that means literal metric tons of #eWaste get created every year producing those.

@LibreKitsune I still consider this a hostile act and a blatant violation of their previous #settlement that forced them into #publishing said #IPv4 #ranges...
- In fact had they not actively worked against that previously and it only raised my attention when I saw errors re: said ranges.
I'm considering to build a #workaround on #GitHub to just use a #cookie and some #compute to do it, but if I had cash to spare I'd sue them into removing #ClownFlare and allowing me to scrape the list directly...
- I'm very close to just sending them an #invoice for the personnel hours wasted on that bs and billing them regularly for the expense of manually checking the difference between those (@ minimum of 60:15 billable minutes)...
Otherwise I do expect regulators to actually go after #OpenAI and force them to undo the #Cloudflare-based #Enshittification, since it's neither feasible nor reasonable to claim "#DDoS-#Protection" for a 48 Bytes (!!!) file...

@uastronomer it's something I.did implement in the past (abeit #KVM + #Proxmox, but the steps are similar enough):
You can seperate #Storage and #Compute given you have a Storage-LAN that is fast enough (and does at least 9k if not 64k Jumbo Frames) and have the "Compute Nodes" entirely #diskless (booting via #iPXE from the #SAN) and then mount the storage via #iSCSI or #Ceph.
- Basically it allows you to scale Compute and Storage independently from each other as they are transparent layers and not be confined to limits of a single chassis & it's I/O options...
Did a bigger project (easily 8-digits in hardware, as per MSRP) where a Employer/Client did #CloudExit amidst escalating costs and #ROI being within quarters (if not months at the predicted growth rate)...
