Good environmental news from NPR
"The owners of a large South Bay quarry and cement plant broke ground this week on a massive effort to remove tons of toxic waste from a creek that flows from the Santa Cruz Mountains into the San Francisco Bay."
"Zars noted that the fight against the company was largely driven by community members involved with the Sierra Club, not by local and federal regulators, who he said fell short of adequately holding the company accountable."
“We brought the action even though the California Water Board could have, even though EPA could have,” he said. “But that hadn’t happened.”
"This latest plan is a shocking display of cowardice," as our science director
@jarosenfield told
@rachbecknews
Newsom's plan would be devastating for already hard-hit fisheries, Chinook #salmon & other native fish & wildlife, Tribes, and Bay-Delta communities.
Also concerning: the Newsom Admin's move to limit disclosures about how the plan would affect the Bay-Delta through a bill waiving #CEQA requirements. Ashley Overhouse of
Defenders of Wildlife said the exemption is "bordering on undemocratic because you are cutting out the public in an important process."

The EPA's water pollution control technologies are decades out of date -- so we took legal action with a coalition of partners.
And in our first big win against the new Trump Administration, we won!
The 9th Circuit has ruled that the #EPA must update its pollution controls for oil refineries, chemical plants & other polluting industries.
This ruling will help stop harmful pollution here in the #BayArea and across the country!

Bunnies for adoption!
Two of the baby #bunnies my friends were fostering are available for pre-adoption in #PaloAlto #SFBay. They're the little boys, Jeremy and Frederick.
Jeremy is the absolute sweetest baby. Even though he's the littlest bun in the litter, he's the most active and curious. If I had space at home and didn't have to worry about Murder Kitty's reaction to a rabbit, I would have already claimed him.

Frederick is also wonderfully sweet and less of a troublemaker than his brother. We had a nice goodbye cuddle before he left his foster home.

They're both white with blue eyes. If you don't already have a bunny, adopting two gives them each a playmate and companion. Their 4 sisters will be available soon.
Their beautiful mama Mocha is also available.

Pic shows Mama Mocha with two of her now huge babies. The red-eyed bun is a girl but the one behind her is probably Frederick.
"Sometimes, when the world closes in, the best thing to do is to go on a small adventure, perhaps to an island with trees, trails, beaches and wild animals."

We need your help keeping an eye out for #algae blooms in the Bay
As the weather heats up, conditions will be ripe for harmful algae blooms (HABs). After a devastating #HAB in 2022, we ramped up our algae monitoring program and now have a team algae sampling across the Bay Area through the summer.
But we could always use more eyes on the Bay If you see coffee-colored water or unusually red or bright green water in the Bay, take photos, note down the time & exact location, and reach out to our pollution tip line: https://baykeeper.org/report-pollution/
Photos: First two photos are of brown-colored water during a small algae bloom in #Alameda in 2024 that luckily dissipated quickly. The third photo is a close-up image of the alga Akashiwo sanguinea and the last image is of our team collecting samples from the Bay #algaebloom #harmfulalgaeblooms #sanfraniscobay #bayarea #sfbay #waterpollution
What a difference a week makes. Same hike, more fog! Heavy marine layer blanketed both ocean and bay, but this trek allowed me to get above it for a while. Weather up there was incredibly beautiful -- low 60's, sunny, warm breeze.
I loaded up my pack to its full weight, continuing my efforts to get my legs in backpacking shape. Added 6lbs of free weights to make sure I was really feeling it. Spoiler alert: I did.

1) Absolutely gorgeous day. Sunny, low 70s, fog drifting in toward evening. #SFBay
2) Made it to the gym before all the hurrying started.
3) Kiddo starts helping her old swim teacher with Level 1-3 classes next week. We are all excited about it!
We're in court fighting for clean creeks and a healthy Bay!
A few years ago, our investigators found that Sunnyvale and Mountain View's runoff contained high levels of bacteria--around 50x what's legally allowed. What's more, the runoff was being discharged into local creeks. So we sued under the #CleanWaterAct.
Since then, we've tried to work with the cities to address their problems, but they have refused to take responsibility. So now we're in court to prove our case and demand they do right by their residents and the Bay's waters.

The United Heckathorn Superfund site in Richmond continues to house dangerous pollutants, including DDT, right along #SFBay shoreline. It's time to clean it up!
This Thursday, join us at EPA's latest community discussion on Zoom. The meeting will focus on the health & ecological risk assessments of the site.
We encourage all Richmond residents to join the meeting and put pressure on EPA officials to properly clean up the pollution!

Tara Duggan: These native #California creatures are unusually well adapted for climate change. The tiny native #oysters of San Francisco Bay managed to outlive the Gold Rush, bay-shore development and decades of punishing pollution. New research shows they have a fighting chance to survive global warming as well.
