Progress report:

#unmeta: 100%
#akkoma, #threema, #signal are way better

#unmicrosoft: 100% everything I have control over, but work forces Windows on me
#nobara, #fedora, #mint and various distros on my test laptop

#ungoogle: 75%, still have some email adresses that are used as login everywhere, switching is hard work.
For Android I have #grapheneos and #calyxos on my daily drivers, but testing #mobilelinux like #sailfish and #ubuntutouch.
#Waterfox and #Iceraven for browsers.
And for the rest of the services I love my #nextcloud.
Also, #peertube and #nebula.
Honestly, #google is the hardest to get rid of, but maybe the one that really shouldn't have all that data about me.

Changed my mind. I decided to install Sailfish on the Sony Xperia 10 III.

It was plain sailing. 😃

I guess, things only become difficult when things go wrong, and things went very smoothly.

In brief, I unlocked the bootloader, and downloaded Android 12 from Sony. I flashed that to the Xperia (11 wasn't available). I performed all the usual 'phone stuff, which worked. I then flashed the 'phone with Sailfish using fastboot.

The same things are still working.

good feedback! i think #furiphone has support for #android apps (#waydroid iirc?) and back in the day so did #jolla / #sailfish - i think you can get those on a #sony these days

also i've run android-x86 in vm and its alright but idk what those apps are gonna try. supposedly only finance apps are allowed by google to check for a rooted phone but ... who knows peabee.substack.com/p/everyone

The best way to check if your current network provider (carrier) supports your 'phone/OS is to check for provisioning.

1. open your dialler
2. type *#*#4636#*#*
3. check the config options are enabled for:
VoLTE provisioned
WiFi calling provisioned

Unfortunately, a further recommendation is to use the Sony flashing tool, Emma, to downgrade the Android version. Emma only runs on Windows. I don't have a Windows PC. So, I will either need to borrow a Windows PC, or try it with Virtualbox/Qemu.

I suspect borrowing a Windows PC might be the easiest route.

A new epic adventure is about to begin. My quest is to have a privacy-respecting, and functional, mobile 'phone that can also make calls using VoLTE and WiFi calling. My travelling companion will be Sailfish OS. I'm not expecting it to be an easy journey.

My first step was getting a compatible 'phone. Here it is, my Sony Xperia 10 III. The Xperia is currently running Android 13. I'm going to revert it back to Android 11, as per the recommendation in the Sailfish docs.
